Pain killers or relievers are used for the treatment of headaches, sore muscles, arthritis and a lot more different types of pains.1

These medicines vary in their strength and type according to different types of pain. Pain relievers are subject to individual differences as everyone responds differently to them and some may even do not respond at all.1

So, which reliever should you choose for your pain?

·        There are different class of relievers available in the OTC market: Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) which reduces fever and alleviates pain in the muscle; and another class called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) that are responsible for reducing inflammation, swelling and irritation. These could be available in oral and in topical form – lotions, creams or sprays.2

·        Also available as a prescription medication for pain relief: Opioids, which are very strong pain treatments and are mainly used for acute pain and pain after surgery.2

Before choosing a pain relief, you should be aware of the medication side effects Using NSAIDs, for example, can increase your risk of heart attack and kidney problems. It can also increase the risk of stomach ulcers.2

Consult you healthcare professional before taking these medicines & if your pain persists ask your doctor to prescribe you something stronger. 1
