CHOLESTEROL NUMBERS: WHAT DO THEY MEAN?

Most people don't know they have high cholesterol, despite being very common.1

Learning what your numbers mean, can help!

-                    LDL, is "bad" cholesterol, because it forms clogs in the blood vessels - The lower the better.2

-                    HDL, is "good" cholesterol, because it takes up extra cholesterol back to your liver to be eliminated from the body, so that no blockage occurs in the blood vessels - The higher the better.2

-         Adding up LDL and HDL is called Total Cholesterol, you will find this number also in your lab test.3

-         Lab test showing high levels of triglycerides is also an indicator of having high risk of heart disease.3

Physicians now believe that measuring non-HDL* cholesterol level may be a better predictor for your risk of heart disease than good, bad or total cholesterol.4

Non-HDL cholesterol, simply measures all the "bad" types of cholesterol, not just “LDL”.4

*(An optimal level of non-HDL cholesterol is less than 130 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL)).4
