Having a group of risk factors leading to cardiovascular disease, is called “Metabolic syndrome.” This significantly raises your risk of developing stroke, diabetes, heart disease, or altogether. It's also related to a disorder called insulin resistance (Where insulin is less able to keep the amount of sugar in the blood at a healthy level). 1, 2, 3

Generally, presenting 3 or more of these factors, implies a diagnosis of metabolic syndrome:*

1.     High blood pressure of >130/80 mm Hg. 1, 2

2.     High fasting blood glucose. This means a level > 100 mg/dL. 1, 2

3.     High triglyceride levels of > 150 mg/dL.1, 2, 4

4.     Low HDL (good) cholesterol < 40 mg/dL for men and < 50 mg/dL for women. 1, 2, 4

5.     Abdominal obesity of having a waist circumference of > 35 inches for women and > 40 inches for men. 1, 2

Likelihood of having metabolic syndrome increase by age, being overweight, having diabetes, hypertension or high cholesterol. 1, 2

* NHLBI and AHA recommendation
