Although a lot of patients can reach good cholesterol levels by simply leading a healthy lifestyle, still others will definitely need medicines to lower their cholesterol levels. Lowering cholesterol may accordingly help reduce the risk for heart attack or stroke. 1, 2

Who will surely need cholesterol medications?

·        If your high LDL levels started at young age, or has been diagnosed with familial hypercholesterolemia, a term referring to family history of high cholesterol.2

·        If you have very high levels of “bad” cholesterol: You will be at high risk if high cholesterol is left untreated.1

·        If you were diagnosed with cardiovascular disease (CVD): This means you already have narrowed arteries because of too much plaque. 1

·        If you have Type 2 diabetes: as diabetes lowers “good” cholesterol levels and raises “bad” cholesterol levels.1

And vice versa, taking cholesterol medicines does not mean that you don’t have to make diet and lifestyle changes. The fact is that it’s important to take your medicines exactly as prescribed together with eating a heart-healthy diet and including regular physical activity in your weekly routine. 3
